Joe Burke is one of my heroes on the button box. He is a beast. This recording of him dealing with a blunder was a massive lesson to me. A life lesson.
Take a look at that marvellous tune. Mr Burke plays it. And then, at 1:00, he blunders! But that is not important. Only two or three notes. He just smiles and plays along ! Take a look (and watch and listen for that moment, starting at 1:00). Maybe you notice it, probably it will go past. He blundered just a few notes. But then—you really have to listen closely to get it:
What I learned from it: he just acknowledges the blunder with a wee smile and continues to play along as if nothing happened.
Transposed to magic, it could mean: if manage to push in a small looser – just keep on as if nothing happened. It is all human and don’t worry too much about that occasional blunder. If you lose, just keep ongoing.
The world will continue to rotate, and the audience will forget and forgive that occasional and human blunders.
Don’t strive for perfectionism–even the absolute masters will ring in a blunder from time to time. Never get caught by that “being perfect”. Take it easy, and—smile.
We are all human. It is just about a few tricks.
This was one of the best lessons I ever received.
Thank you, Joe Burke!
