This is the new express card trick. But the prin­ciple can also be trans­ferred to many other areas, for example, to swap a fol­ded pre­dic­tion slip in men­tal magic (I’ll just say “con­fab­u­la­tion”).

It is a large Air­mail envel­ope made of card­board with a view­ing win­dow, in which there is a small envel­ope, also with a view­ing win­dow (my AVALON envel­ope). Inside is the back of a play­ing card.

A spec­tator now freely selects a play­ing card from a pack of cards and signs it. The card goes back into the pack, which is put into its envelope.

Now one takes the air­mail envel­ope, pulls out the smal­ler envel­ope and takes out the card. It is the card signed by the spectator!

I am very proud of the devel­op­ment of this big envel­ope, because it took me many years to get everything together: the right mater­ial, the right dimen­sions and an appeal­ing design. Now everything works the way I always wanted it to.

I make these envel­opes by hand, and that’s why I have lim­ited the edi­tion to 100 for the time being. More is not pos­sible, because I need about 2 hours (!) for one set of envel­opes. A lov­er’s work…

In 2016, I launched my AVALON envel­ope for the first time and it was very well received. Now I am intro­du­cing the new AVALON 2.0 envel­ope with some import­ant improvements.

The AVALON 2.0 envel­ope is an inno­cent-look­ing win­dow envel­ope that is clev­erly pre­pared for the exchange of all flat items such as play­ing cards, credit cards, bills, busi­ness cards and so on. The exchange is child’s play and can­not be seen with the best will in the world.

The new AVALON 2.0 envel­ope is made of more robust paper and offers an improve­ment that was not avail­able before: You can let the spec­tat­ors look inside the envel­ope before the exchange — noth­ing can be seen except the object! Even the pre­par­a­tion is not visible.

Of course, this allows for com­pletely new routines and tricks, as I explain in the video that comes with the envel­ope. The exact hand­ling is explained down to the last detail. The same goes for the BONUS routine “Express Card Trick”, which alone is worth the price of the envelope.

This snake bas­ket is the res­ult of years of work. It incor­por­ates ideas that have never been used in a snake bas­ket before. In devel­op­ing it, I wanted to see some details real­ised that no one had dared to do before. I always liked the effect of the snake bas­ket, but was not sat­is­fied with ANY of the designs. Either the bas­ket looked cheap or the snake that came out of the bas­ket looked like a mech­an­ical mon­ster. I also did­n’t like the snakes in terms of design.

The fact that you had to force a card and could not use a freely chosen one (let alone a signed one) reduced for me the effect, won­der­ful in itself, to the trick with the card duck (where at least you could use a freely chosen card). So I sat down and made up my rules by which my snake bas­ket was to be played. After count­less attempts (con­struc­tion, gim­micks and flow), this concept was born.

Here is the routine as the audi­ence sees it:

On stage is a small table with a large snake bas­ket with a lid. The per­former opens it, reaches in and pulls out a real­istic-look­ing snake. The snake is shown and put back into the bas­ket, over which the per­former puts a large cloth.

Now a spec­tator is allowed to freely(!) choose a card from a pack of cards to sign on the pic­ture side. The pack is placed in the card box and the spec­tator him­self puts his card some­where in the middle of the pack in the box and closes it.

The pack in the sealed card box is thrown into the bas­ket and the snake is instruc­ted to find the chosen card.

Now the unbe­liev­able hap­pens. The per­former grabs the cloth at two corners and lifts it slightly. Sud­denly a fig­ure appears under the cloth. The cloth lifts and sud­denly the snake, stand­ing in the bas­ket, appears behind the cloth and begins a snake dance. This alone seems incred­ible because the snake’s move­ments look so real.

It dives back into the bas­ket and sud­denly you see torn pieces of card­board fly­ing out of the bas­ket in a high arc! Obvi­ously, the snake has attacked the card box!

A few moments later, count­less cards fly out of the bas­ket! This is the well-known card foun­tain effect.

Now the snake mys­ter­i­ously and slowly slith­ers out of the bas­ket again, just as it did before—only this time it has the signed card in its mouth!

Here are the facts that set this cre­ation far above all others:

• The snake can be taken out of the bas­ket before­hand and viewed up close (there is only one snake).
• The card can be freely chosen and signed. It is even pos­sible to tear off a corner, which the viewer may keep for later identification.
• The card is pushed into the pack of cards already in the case by the viewer him­self. This is placed in the bas­ket without any false movement.
• The move­ment of the snake is amaz­ing. It seems to really live and crawl out of the bas­ket! No mech­an­ics or elec­tron­ics are used, the prin­ciple is ingeni­ously solved.
  The effect requires hardly any manual skill and can even be per­formed sur­roun­ded (with a little practice)!

• The snake (150 cm long). Not a cheap snake made of thin fab­ric, but a high-qual­ity fab­ric snake that looks very real! It is ready prepared.
• The high-qual­ity snake bas­ket with lid, which also looks like a real snake bas­ket (see photo).

• A gim­mick for the pack of cards that makes the described effect possible.
