In the Patrick Page Audio Archives there is a fascinating and eye-opening interview Pat did with the legendary Maurice Fogel. On the November 28th, 1977 interview, one of the topics is about creating. There, Maurice Fogel expressed his thoughts on creating:
“Nobody can create, only God. We can only assemble, originate, produce variants to existing stuff, and put things into another context or combination. But not create.”
That says it all. In that context, he also mentioned that originality, and especially art, in magic is only in the presentation, showmanship and delivery of the routines. But not in the material or technical stuff. He mentioned that he doesn‘t see magic as an art (and Patrick Page agrees on that), but one very tiny aspect and part of the entertainment world.
True words from a wise man, which should end quite a few useless discussions we have in our circles about art and creation.
