In Bascom Jones’ magazine MAGICK #441, there is a lovely trick by Phil Goldstein, called “Tobaccognition” (what a title). It depends on the OLRAM count for display, uses only six (unprepared) cards and is reset the moment you finished performance. And it has a timely topic — that of smoking vs. non-smoking.
For some time, I have been performing this in combination with my trick “BOXED” (signed bill in ZIPPO lighter). The end of the routine is that a borrowed signed bill and inside a lighter.
Phil uses a pack of cigarettes, which the spectator puts on one of the six cards (free choice). Then he shows that the not chosen cards have no-smoking signs on them, and only the chosen one a sign for a smoker’s lounge (or vice versa, depending on the spectator’s choice). Look up the trick and all will be clear.
This is what I do:
I borrow a low domination bill, commenting on the price of smoking (and why I quit it, etc.). The bill is signed, folded, and vanished. I bring out the cards, loading the bill into the lighter.
I go through the procedure with the cards, but before, I take out the loaded lighter. I ask the spectator to place it onto one card. I show he picked the only different card. First effect.
Then I comment on his bill, and take the lighter apart, only to find his signed bill inside the inner fuel part.
A pretty effect, I have done this in table-hopping because everything is reset the moment I finish the performance. If you load the bill in your pocket, it is even more practical. Almost no props (cards, lighter, thumb tip for the vanish), but a nice routine.
Try it. Pretty cool combination, I think.
