In the magic comÂmunity arrises from time to time the topÂic of âbeing a creÂatÂorâ or âcreÂationsâ. So â time to take a short look at what creÂation, creÂatÂors or âbeing creÂatÂiveâ could mean.
If we look it up in the dicÂtionÂary, the resÂults will be someÂwhat like this:
To creÂate:
To bring into existence.
To invest with a new form, office, or rank.
To proÂduce or bring about by a course of action or behavior.
To proÂduce through imaÂginÂatÂive skill.
To make or bring into existÂence someÂthing new.
In magic, we often reduce the term âcreÂateâ someÂwhat and many think, a creÂation is only about putÂting out someÂthing comÂpletely new. SomeÂthing that has nevÂer before seen. Often we conÂfuse and mix the terms âcreÂationâ with âinvenÂtionâ. In my view, this is sort of narÂrow-minded. While the latÂter deals exclusÂively with the nevÂer-been-before, the former is much broader.
To creÂate someÂthing doesnât necesÂsarÂily mean it has to be absoÂlutely new and nevÂer before been there. CreÂatÂing someÂthing can also mean to take someÂthing existÂing and chanÂging it or adding someÂthing worthÂwhile or importÂant to it.
CreÂatÂing can also mean to take an existÂing trick and to write an oriÂginÂal script or presentÂaÂtion for it. Some very good tricks are only so good because of the new slant on the presentÂaÂtion a cerÂtain perÂson gave them. Before, they were mere little puzzles, until someone thought about how to elevÂate it from the puzzle level into the mirÂacle class. So, this perÂson actuÂally creÂated something.
To creÂate someÂthing has to do with conÂtribÂutÂing someÂthing own.
A recent example is Matt Johnsonâs peek envelÂope (After Dark). The underÂlyÂing prinÂciple (that speÂcial envelÂope) is not new. In fact, I have such (switchÂing) envelÂopes in my archive for many years. In former times they were used solely for switchÂing bilÂlets, bills, cards or as a quadÂruple out (with double facers in each compartment).
But then Matt added some cerÂtain extras to the envelÂope, which transÂformed it into a gimÂmick which enables you to peek an informÂaÂtion writÂten on a busiÂness card which was inserÂted into the envelope.
So, he didnât invent a new prinÂciple (the envelÂopes did exists before), but, by adding cerÂtain importÂant details, he creÂated a ânewâ peek envelÂope. As a matÂter of fact, because he did this, he can be called a creator.
If you are interÂested in this envelÂope, go to his webÂsite at: http://âwwwâ.urbâanâdecepâtionâ.com/âaâfâtâeârâdâark. It is worth the twenty bucks he charges.
Maybe in magic we could take some heat off this topÂic and omit the useÂless and often embarÂrassÂing disÂcusÂsions, if we tackle the creÂation probÂlem from this angle, with a bit more openÂness and tolerance.
EveryÂbody who conÂtribÂutes someÂthing own to someÂthing known, can be called a creÂatÂor, the same as the perÂson that proÂduces someÂthing entirely new.
CreÂation is not about someÂthing new, but someÂthing unique and from oneâs own soul and brain.
Pass it on!
