The Diary Effect

This is my ver­sion of the clas­sic ‘Diary Effect’ as inven­ted by Ted Dan­son. It was inspired by and is loosely based on ideas by Patrick Page, Eddie Joseph, Mark Els­don, Mike Born­stein, Richard Web­ster and Bob Cas­sidy. I wrote up the work­ings of this in an art­icle in my blog. See the art­icle here, so you know what you are deal­ing with. I had some diar­ies prin­ted in Span­ish and Ger­man lan­guage for my lec­ture tours, now finally it is avail­able in English.

The diary effect is without ques­tion one of the stronger effects for the magi­cian who really wants to leave an impres­sion on the audi­ence. It has stood the test of time and since its inven­tion dec­ades ago there have been numer­ous ver­sions of this clas­sic effect.

What I offer here is my take on the top­ic. In the past 25 years I have tried out and tested almost any avail­able meth­od. This offer­ing is what I finally decided on.

Whilst there have been ingenu­ous meth­ods and solu­tions, for me, most of them lacked a cer­tain sim­pli­city and prac­tic­ab­il­ity. After get­ting drunk with mem­or­ising and car­ry­ing around mul­tiple diar­ies, geni­us Patrick Page solved all my prob­lems. His effect ‹Old Moore’s Diary› offered almost everything I had could ever have wished for the diary effect. It was the most prac­tic­al and the easi­est ver­sion I ever found at these times.

Based on his concept (and some oth­er people’s con­cepts) I developed my own ver­sion, which has some sub­tleties which make the effect even stronger. After a lot of exper­i­ment­ing I decided to put a cer­tain set of cards into the diary, which enabled a fant­ast­ic ver­sion of the well-known pre­mon­i­tion effect by Eddie Joseph (see my blog article).

Best of all: the per­form­ance of the diary effect is com­pletely self work­ing and you don’t need a single sleight to per­form it! After the per­form­ance everything is reset for the next per­form­ance, what makes this ver­sion per­fect for the strolling magi­cian or the table hopper.
